UPCYCLED TABLE
Echo Park, Los Angeles
As the saying goes, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” As soon as I saw the free vintage desk and the herringbone pattern top, I knew I had to do something to salvage the top. Fortunately, I was able to convince the guys to drop it off for $20 since I didn’t have a big enough car. The original design concept was to save the top part of the four legs but as I was chipping away at certain parts, it became apparent that the age has gotten to the legs. The best way to proceed was to cut away everything but the top. As I sanded away the old stain on the wood, the beautiful grains started to appear. Even though each piece of wood that create the herringbone mosaic was more or less consistent, the grains and natural color of the wood provided a depth that cannot be replicated. I finally applied a thick layer of wax since this top would now serve as a dining table. I was able to find these CNC plywood table bases on Etsy and after a coat of wax on the legs, the colors matched perfectly.
